Things Wandering off “Macbeth” -2020

Japan

JIYU Gekijo-Freedom Theatre
[from Tottori, Japan]

People with and without disabilities get together to take on the masterpiece of Shakespeare, but it has a twist, substantially and intentionally deviating from the original work. The piece was first created in 2019. New cast members have been added for the 2020 version of this work.

This work will explore the themes of “power” through “the Tragedy of Macbeth” by William Shakespeare. It is needless to say that people with disabilities do have a desire for power and social advance-ment. When we were trying to look at this desire buried deep inside of our mind through theatre performance, we came across the script of “Haiyaku (Casting)” by Tomoyuki Nagayama, a playwright in Miyazaki. This encounter helped us a lot ex-pand the world view of this work. Watching it comes highly recommended!
